Education at CNS
Education at CNS is directed by Tirimbina Rainforest Center, a Wisconsin USA - based organization
in cooperation with the Milwaukee Public Museum and Riveredge Nature Center. The program emphasizes
a global perspective in learning about local systems, and experience-based learning based on
scientific inquiry.
Under the direction of a TRC Education Director, programs serve resident guests, local or touring
day visitors, teachers, students for day or extended visits, special interest adult groups,
naturalist guides and volunteers.
Educational programs are designed to address the needs, interests and abilities of those who
visit the center.
- Elementary and high school school groups are guided through basic and sequential learning
experiences in science and integrated curriculum.
- College students are involved in investigations and research.
- Adults who are informal learners find opportunities to explore general
or specific interests.
The Center offers an environmental education program unlike any other in
Costa Rica. Current program offerings include:
- Guided tours of the rainforest trails
- Self-guided island and canopy exploration
- Workshops in natural history, arts and science
- Short eco-courses - e.g., biodiversity, sustainability, bats, plant/animal interactions
- School classes: biodiversity, aquatic studies, wildlife communities, forest analysis
- Extended programs for school groups: teacher or TRC-designed topics
- Lay research: participation in an on-going scientific research project
- Evening lectures by local speakers, visiting scientists, TRC education staff
- Creative arts
- Audio-visual presentations
- Guide and volunteer training
- Student internships in environmental education
- Teacher training and curriculum development
