The philosophy of the CNS is well described in the following statement of former NGS president Gilbert M. Grosvenor :
There’s a whole world yet to be discovered, not of mysterious unknown places but of relationships among the places. A century ago great explorers were busy filling the blanks on the globe. What we haven't filled in yet are the blanks of knowledge about those places, their peoples and environments, and how they all fit together - an even greater challenge.
